Directions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
Step 2
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 4
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Step 5
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Step 6
Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer the cake to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 7
In a heatproof bowl, combine the dark chocolate and heavy cream. Place the bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, making sure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.
Step 8
Remove the bowl from the heat and let the chocolate ganache cool slightly. Pour the ganache over the cooled cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
Step 9
Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour to set the ganache.
Step 10
Dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar before serving.
